Supporting Kidney Kids through Kan Tabs
Small Tabs, Big Hearts: Supporting Kidney Kids through Kan Tabs
What is the Project?
The Kan Tabs initiative is a clever way to turn everyday waste into a lifeline for families. By collecting aluminum wine bottle tops and "tear tabs" from drink cans, the Lions Club of Middle Districts helps fund essential services for Kidney Kids NZ. This not-for-profit organisation has been supporting New Zealand families dealing with kidney disorders since 1990.
Why it Matters?
Living with a kidney disorder is a heavy burden for a child and their family. Kidney Kids provides the support system they need to navigate this journey, including:
-
Annual Camps: Specialized camps for children who can’t attend standard school camps due to complex medical needs.
-
Educational Resources: Regular newsletters and information to help parents manage their child's health.
-
Emotional Support: Connecting families so they know they aren't walking this path alone.
The Lions’ Impact
Lions Clubs have a long, proud history of contributing to this cause in a huge way. We are pleased to announce that $158 has just been donated to Kidney Kids following our latest collection. This result is thanks to the consistent efforts of the Middle Districts Lions Club members and the generosity of the Palmy public who continue to drop off their recycling at our collection points.
"The Kan Tabs project proves that no contribution is too small. A single bread bag of bottle tops might seem minor, but when our Palmy community comes together, those tabs transform into memories at summer camp and vital support for our bravest little warriors."
How You Can Help:
Members and locals can collect tops and tabs in a simple plastic bag. Once you've gathered a good amount, you can:

Contact us via our website to arrange a collection or find out more.
-
Drop them off at Leader & Watt: Use the back entrance on Taonui Street. Go through the gateway to the right-hand side, where you'll find dedicated Wheelie Bins ready for your donation.
