Partnering with City Mission to Fight Hunger in Palmy
Lions Fill the Shelves: Partnering with City Mission to Fight Hunger in Palmy
What is the Project?
The Lions Club of Middle Districts (MDLC) has stepped up to support the City Mission emergency foodbank right here in Palmerston North. The City Mission provides a vital lifeline through various community programmes tailored for the elderly, isolated individuals, new parents, refugees, and anyone facing sudden hardship. Following an incredibly busy Christmas period, the Mission’s foodbank shelves were left critically low, with only enough food remaining for eight parcels. To help restock and ensure no local family goes hungry, MDLC approved a grant of $950 in March 2026.
Why it Matters
The less privileged in our society are facing an increasingly tough time, and current economic pressures mean the demand for emergency food support is only growing. While the City Mission is incredibly well-supported by the generosity of All Saints parishioners and their massive annual July Can Can Appeal, the sheer volume of families in dire need has outstripped their current supplies. This funding goes directly toward purchasing non-frivolous, essential grocery items to get the foodbank back on its feet during a historically low period before their winter appeal kicks off.
The Lions' Impact
This $950 grant provides immediate relief to our frontline community workers and the vulnerable people they serve. Here is how this support will benefit Palmerston North:
-
Restocking Essential Supplies: Instantly tops up depleted foodbank shelves to ensure emergency parcels are ready for distribution.
-
Supporting the Vulnerable: Provides immediate sustenance for rough sleepers, the homeless, and local families hit by sudden job losses or tough family situations.
-
Strengthening Local Networks: Partners with a highly reputable, long-standing charity that has proven its dedication to valuable public service in the Manawatū area.
"With world events making everyday life harder for so many in our community, the City Mission's work is more critical than ever. The Middle Districts Lions are proud to ensure that when a local family hits a breaking point, the Mission has the resources to hand them a lifeline."
