Supporting Hockey Manawatu’s Ramp Upgrade

What is the project

Hockey is a staple of our local sports community here in Palmerston North, but to keep the game thriving, the facilities need to be safe and accessible for everyone. Hockey Manawatu Incorporated identified an urgent need to replace the existing wheelchair access ramp at their facility. The old structure had unfortunately deteriorated due to rot and warping, turning what should be a welcoming entrance into a major safety hazard.

Why it matters

Inclusivity isn't just a buzzword—it's about making sure the facility remains fully accessible for the entire sporting community. This ramp is a vital lifeline providing safe, dignified, and inclusive access for disabled participants, elderly spectators, volunteers, and community members. Without this crucial upgrade, community participation was at risk, and the facility could no longer meet its responsibility to provide a safe, accessible environment for its users.

The Lions' Impact

On June 9th, the Lions Club of Middle Districts Charitable Trust proudly approved and paid a grant of $750 to Hockey Manawatu Incorporated to help get this project off the ground. The total cost to remove the old decking and install the new compliant boards is $5,885 (thanks to a generous discounted rate from Warren Phillips Builders). Our contribution helps bridge the gap to ensure this essential work happens quickly.

By supporting this project, the grant will achieve the following benefits:

  • Eliminate Hazards: Removes the health and safety risks tied to the rotting timber.

  • Restore Compliance: Rebuilds a reliable, fully compliant access ramp.

  • Maintain Inclusivity: Keeps the facility welcoming for disabled participants and elderly spectators alike.

  • Support Mobility: Ensures dignity and ease of access for local volunteers and families.

"At Middle Districts Lions, community means ensuring absolutely everyone can participate safely. When we heard that local players, spectators, and volunteers were facing safety risks just trying to get into the pavilion, we knew we had to step up and help keep sports in Palmy inclusive for all."
